Grandpa

My Grandpa Nick was a fishing champion. I never met him, but my grandma told me stories of their life together. Their life together before he committed suicide and she had to raise my mom and aunt by herself in a new country - America. My grandmother told me stories of how she used to wait tables at Sammy's Restaurant in Hamtramck. She was supposed to wear stockings, but she hated stockings so everyday she would draw a line up the back of her leg with an eyeliner. She worked at the restaurant and relied on neighbours to keep an eye out on her kids. My mom became a parent way too soon. Because she was nine years older than her sister she became responsible for her care.
My Grandfather never adjusted to his new life in America. He was a concert pianist in Latvia. He worked on a farm in Dexter when he was sponsored.
Where this is going... I am obsessed with fishing stories. I can't get enough. Maybe fishing was an escape for my grandfather. I know the books are an escape for me. Life on the high seas. Away from the schedules and protocol of landlubber life. Just me and the fish...

No excuse for this, McCain

Arizona Sen. John McCain refused to apologize yesterday for his use of a racial slur to condemn the North Vietnamese prison guards who tortured and held him captive during the war.

"I hate the gooks," McCain said yesterday in response to a question from reporters aboard his campaign bus. "I will hate them as long as I live."

I am married to an Asian American. And this is the character of one of our national leaders. Can we, for once, have a representative of our country that isn't a complete idiot? As a friend said, maybe we should all wear rice patty hats to his next rally.

So here I am...

So It has almost been two months since I made an honest living. I have to say I am getting accustomed to piecing together an income and raising my own kids. Although much of my day is spent at the pool with my two swim teamers I am able to work on my own stuff in the meantime.
Here is a photo of my first completed charms. They are made from polymer clay and mounted to Scrabble pieces. I think I will make them into earrings and put them on my etsy site.
